How UV-C works

UV-C is short-wavelength ultraviolet light. At 254 nanometres — the wavelength this Philips lamp emits — it penetrates the cell of a microbe and damages the DNA and RNA inside it. With that genetic code disrupted, bacteria, viruses and mould spores in the air and on exposed surfaces can no longer reproduce, so the room is left disinfected after a cycle. It works as a physical mechanism, not a spray or chemical — there is no residue and no fragrance, only light doing the work in an empty, sealed room.

Use in an empty, closed room only

UV-C is powerful — that is exactly why it works, and exactly why it must never reach skin or eyes. Operating it responsibly is simple:

  • Clear the room of all people, pets and plants before switching on.
  • Close the door and run the cycle from outside the room.
  • Never look at the lit tube and never expose skin or eyes to it.
  • Ventilate briefly, then the room is ready to use again.

This is a surface-and-air disinfection device for empty rooms. It is not a medical device and not a cure for any illness.

How is this different from the standard 36W tube?
It's the same genuine Philips 36W 254 nm 4 ft UV-C tube with identical coverage and the same one-tube-per-100 sq ft rule. The only difference is the housing: this version sits in a heavier, more robust box-type fitting we build for tougher environments and frequent handling — hospitals, industrial units, warehouses. It is not a DIY enclosure or a box you place items inside; it's a sturdier room-disinfection fitting.
Is this a genuine Philips lamp, or a copy?
It is a genuine Philips (Signify) UV-C lamp from original stock, paired with a genuine Philips driver, in a heavy-duty box-type fitting we build ourselves at Jainsons. You can verify the Philips branding on the tube itself. Counterfeit UV-C tubes are common in this category — buying from a 1978-established distributor with a GST invoice and four physical showrooms is your protection against that.
Is it safe? Will it harm my staff?
It is completely safe when used as intended: in an empty, closed room with no people, pets or plants inside, switched on from outside. UV-C must never reach skin or eyes directly. Treat it like a disinfection cycle — run it before opening or after closing, ventilate briefly, then the room is ready. It is not a medical device and not a cure for any illness.
What size room does one 36W tube cover?
Plan about one 36W 4 ft tube for every 100 sq ft of floor area for a thorough germicidal cycle — so a 300 sq ft room needs three tubes, a 100 sq ft cabin just one. Not sure? Send us your room size on WhatsApp and we'll tell you exactly what you need.
How long do I run it for?
Run the room sealed and empty for about 2–3 hours per cycle. To cover a bigger space, add one more tube for each extra 100 sq ft rather than leaning on a single tube — and always run it with the room empty and the door closed.
Do I get a GST invoice?
Yes. Every order ships with a GST invoice in your business name, so the tax can flow into your books as input credit. Tell us your GSTIN at order time and we'll bill it correctly.
What's the warranty, and what about the lamp?
Our own box-type fitting carries a 1-year warranty. The Philips TUV UV-C lamp is rated for about 9,000 hours of useful life — it's a consumable, like any tube, so once it passes that its germicidal output has dropped and the tube should be replaced (even if it still lights up). We stock replacements, so re-ordering is straightforward.
Does UV-C replace cleaning, or cure infections?
No. UV-C is an added layer of surface-and-air disinfection for an empty room — it works alongside normal cleaning, it doesn't replace wiping down visible dirt. It is not a medical device and not a treatment or cure for any illness or infection. Think of it as a disinfection cycle for the room itself, not a health treatment for people.
