UV-C disinfects surfaces and air in closed, empty rooms only. Never expose skin or eyes. Remove people, pets and plants, use a timer or remote switch, and ventilate before re-entering. These are UV-C light fittings — not medical devices, not a COVID cure, and not a treatment for any disease, and not a substitute for hand hygiene or chemical cleaning. Full safety notes are below.

How UV-C disinfection works

1 The germicidal band

UV-C at 254 nm is the wavelength used in hospital sterilization, biosafety cabinets, water-treatment plants and HVAC disinfection. It breaks down the DNA and RNA of microbes on exposed surfaces and in air, preventing reproduction.

2 Three factors decide effectiveness

Lamp wattage (higher covers a larger area), distance from surfaces (intensity drops with the square of distance), and exposure time — typically 15–30 min for small spaces, 45–60 min for larger rooms.

3 Line of sight matters

UV-C does not pass through fabric, paper or solid objects. The lamp needs direct line of sight to every surface — cluttered spaces need multiple cycles or repositioned items for full coverage.

How many tubes do I need?

  • Professional rule: 1 × 4-foot 36W tube per 100 sqft of floor area, running 2–3 hours, gives a good disinfection cycle.
  • Small cabinets / DIY boxes (under 80 litres): 1 × 8W or 11W tube, 15–30 min run time.
  • Trade tubes for time: more tubes = less run time; fewer tubes = longer run time.
  • Line of sight: position lamps so all surfaces are exposed, and rearrange items if needed.

Safety — read before you switch on

These are UV-C light fittings — not a medical device and not a COVID cure or treatment for any disease.

  • UV-C radiation is harmful to skin and eyes. Never operate the lamp with people, pets or plants present.
  • Do not look directly at a lit UV-C lamp, even briefly. Use timers or remote switches so it is never on when someone enters the room.
  • Ventilate the room for a few minutes after switching off, before re-entering — UV-C can produce trace ozone.
  • UV-C degrades plastics, rubber seals and certain fabrics over long exposure. Remove sensitive items first.
  • The lamp contains a small amount of mercury vapour. Dispose of broken tubes carefully through e-waste channels.
  • Not a substitute for chemical disinfection, and not a replacement for proper hand hygiene.

Frequently asked questions

How many UV-C tubes do I need for my space?
For medical/hospital/professional use: 1 × 36W (4 ft) tube per 100 sqft of floor area, run 2–3 hours. You can trade tubes for time — more tubes need less run time, fewer tubes need longer. For small cabinets/DIY boxes (under 80 litres), a single 8W or 11W tube run 15–30 minutes is enough. Share your room size via WhatsApp for an exact recommendation.
Can I use this for water tank cleaning?
Yes — commonly used to sterilize the interior surface of drained empty water tanks after physical cleaning. Place the tube inside the empty tank, close the access, and run for 2–3 hours. Most tank-cleaning operators use this for compliance documentation. It is NOT a substitute for an inline UV-C drinking-water purifier — those are sealed flow-through units.
Do you still sell ready-made UV-C disinfection boxes?
No — customers now buy UV-C tube fittings and assemble their own enclosure (cardboard, wooden, or metal) to fit their exact application. WhatsApp your application — mail, currency, tools, parcels — and we will suggest the right tube wattage and rough box dimensions. The tube does the disinfection; the box keeps UV-C contained safely.
Will this work for my dental clinic or hospital ward?
Yes — widely used in dental clinics, OPDs, hospital wards, and OT staging areas for after-hours surface disinfection. For a ~100 sqft treatment room, use one 36W (4 ft) tube and run 2–3 hours with the room sealed and empty. For larger wards (250+ sqft), use multiple tubes positioned to cover all surfaces.
What size UV-C tube do I need for my room?
Match wattage to room area: 8W–11W for small cabins, cars, cabinets up to ~80 litres; 15W–18W for clinic cabins/consultation rooms up to ~150 sqft; 30W–36W for showrooms, classrooms, salons, wards up to ~400 sqft. Larger rooms need more time or multiple fittings. Use the product filter or message on WhatsApp with your room dimensions for a tailored recommendation.
UV-C vs UV-A vs UV-B — what is the difference?
UV-C (200–280 nm, germicidal peak at 254 nm) is the only UV band for germicidal disinfection in closed spaces. UV-A (315–400 nm) is used in nail-dryers, banknote checkers, bug-zappers, tanning beds — not germicidal. UV-B (280–315 nm) is used in tanning and medical phototherapy — also not germicidal. Our Philips tubes are UV-C at 254 nm.
How long do I run a UV-C tube?
Typical guidance: 15–30 minutes for a small closed room with the lamp at full output, longer (45–60 minutes) for larger rooms, higher ceilings, or deeper sterilization. The room must be sealed and empty of people, pets, and plants. Use a timer or remote switch and step out before turning it on.
Is UV-C safe for pets and plants?
UV-C is unsafe for any living tissue — humans, pets, plants — during operation. Before switching on: remove pets, cover or move plants, and close the door. After the cycle ends, ventilate the room for a few minutes before re-entering. Used correctly with the room empty, UV-C is a clean, residue-free disinfection method.
How often do I need to replace the UV-C lamp?
Philips rates its TUV UV-C lamps for about 9,000 hours of useful life. Replace the tube (not the fitting) at roughly that point — it may still appear to light up, but its germicidal UV-C output has dropped. The fitting carries a 1-year warranty. WhatsApp us with the wattage and length when you need a fresh lamp.
Are these genuine Philips lamps with proper warranty?
Yes — all 9 SKUs use genuine Philips UV-C lamps and carry the standard Philips lamp warranty against early failure. Jainsons Lights backs every order with four Delhi NCR showrooms for service and a full GST invoice for institutional buyers.
Can I install this myself?
Yes — these fittings plug into a standard 220–240V Indian socket. The 8W and 11W cord-switch variants are plug-and-play. For 15W to 36W fittings in ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted positions, a local electrician can install on any standard circuit. WhatsApp your space layout and we can guide your electrician.
Do you ship across India?
Yes. We ship India-wide with insured logistics. Delivery is typically 3–7 days depending on pincode. A GST invoice is included on every order, downloadable from your account or sent via email.
Do you offer bulk or institutional pricing?
Yes — bracketed wholesale rates for hospitals, hotels, contractors, builders, resellers, and institutional buyers. Register for a trade account on the website, or WhatsApp our team for a bulk quote with your wattage mix and quantities.
Can I see the product before buying?
Yes. UV-C tubes are on display at all four Delhi NCR showrooms — Chandni Chowk, Bhagirath Palace, Kotla, and Ghitorni. Our team can demonstrate the fittings, explain wattage selection for your space, and advise on safe installation.

How UV-C disinfection works

UV-C light at the 254 nm wavelength is the germicidal band used inside hospital sterilization equipment, lab biosafety cabinets and water-treatment plants. When the lamp is switched on in an empty enclosed space, the radiation breaks down microbe DNA on exposed surfaces so they can no longer reproduce.

Coverage depends on lamp wattage, distance from surfaces, and exposure time. UV-C does not pass through fabric, paper or solid objects — line of sight to the lamp is needed.

How to choose the right wattage

Match lamp wattage to the size of the closed space you want to disinfect.

  • 8W & 11W (10in - 1ft): wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, shoe-racks, washroom shelves, DIY UV-C boxes under 80 litres.
  • 15W (1.5ft): salons, dental cabins, small offices, rooms up to ~100 sqft.
  • 18W (2ft): clinic OPDs, mid-sized offices, restaurants, rooms up to ~150 sqft.
  • 30W (3ft): hospital wards, large kitchens, conference rooms, gyms up to ~250 sqft.
  • 36W (4ft): OT/ICU, large showrooms, warehouses, classrooms up to ~400 sqft.
  • Box-type 36W: enclosed UV-C boxes for parcels, currency, tools, kitchen utensils, mail.

Larger spaces simply need more time, or more than one fitting. WhatsApp us your room size and we will recommend.

Setup and safe operation

Each fitting is plug-and-play. The 8W and 11W cord-switch variants need no installer at all.

  1. Remove the plastic protective diffuser from the top of the fitting before first use.
  2. Plug into a 220-240V Indian socket.
  3. Switch on from outside the room and shut the door.
  4. Run for 15-30 minutes for small spaces, 45-60 minutes for larger rooms.
  5. Switch off and ventilate the space for 5 minutes before re-entry.

Critical: UV-C is harmful to skin and eyes. Never operate with people, pets or plants present. Never look at a lit lamp.

Lamp life, warranty and replacement

Philips UV-C lamps are rated for approximately 8,000 hours of operation — after that the lamp loses germicidal output and should be replaced. The lamp is treated as a consumable.

  • Fitting warranty: 1 year on the Oreva HPL fitting (manufacturing defects only).
  • Lamp warranty: standard Philips warranty against early failure. The UV-C tube itself is a consumable.
  • Replacement bulbs: WhatsApp us with your fitting wattage and length and we will ship a fresh Philips UV-C lamp anywhere in India.
  • GST invoice: every order includes a full GST invoice for business and institutional buyers.

For bulk orders, hospital purchase orders or institutional pricing, register a trade account or message us on WhatsApp.

What UV-C is NOT for

Before you order, please make sure UV-C tube fittings are the right product for your need. They are NOT designed for any of these uses:

  • Water purifier or aquarium UV: water sterilization uses a sealed inline UV-C chamber, not an open fitting.
  • Plant grow light: UV-C harms plant tissue. Plants need UV-A/B or full-spectrum LED grow lights.
  • Nail dryer or gel polish lamp: those are UV-A at 365-405 nm, a different wavelength altogether.
  • Mosquito killer or insect trap: those use UV-A blue light to attract insects, not UV-C.
  • Tanning, party lights or black light: those are UV-A.
  • Resin curing or 3D printing: uses UV-A LED arrays, not UV-C tubes.
  • Room illumination: UV-C is invisible and harmful to eyes. You cannot use it to light a room.
