Recessed or surface?

A recessed light needs a false ceiling with space above. A surface light fixes on a plain ceiling.

Inside ceiling

In a false ceiling (recessed)

The light sits inside a hole in the ceiling, so only the face shows. Needs a false ceiling with space above.

Below ceiling

On the ceiling (surface)

The light fixes on the ceiling with screws. No hole needed, good for concrete or plaster ceilings.

One side · mm

Office grid ceiling (2x2 / 1x1)

Large square panels that drop into 600 x 600 mm ceiling tiles, or fix on the surface with a frame.

New opening

Skylight look

A large panel that looks like daylight coming through a skylight or window. Made for feature ceilings.

How to measure your old hole

Measure the opening in the ceiling in mm, edge to edge, not the rim of the old light.

Diameter · mm

Round hole

Measure across the centre.

One side · mm

Square hole

Measure one side.

  1. Switch off the power.
  2. Ask your electrician to remove the old light.
  3. Measure the opening edge to edge in mm.

Or skip the hole: a surface light fixes on the ceiling and covers it. Close matches are within 5 mm; check with us before buying.

Slim panel or downlight?

A slim panel lights evenly and costs less. A downlight looks softer from below. Deep anti-glare is best where people look up, such as living rooms.

New opening

Slim panel

A thin, flat panel with an even glow across the face. The everyday choice for homes and offices.

Inside ceiling

Downlight

A deeper fitting with the light set a little back, so it looks softer from below.

Deep anti-glare downlight

The light sits well inside the fitting, so you see the light on the floor, not a bright spot on the ceiling.

Tiltable downlight

Can be angled to light a wall, a painting or a shelf.

Diameter · mm

Rimless / adjustable-hole panel

No visible frame; some fit a range of hole sizes, handy for replacements.

Plaster to the edge

Trimless

The edge is plastered into the ceiling and disappears. Needs plaster work when fitting.

Below ceiling

Full-glow panel

Lights from the face and the sides, so the ceiling around it glows too.

Switch on by itself when someone walks in?

Motion sensors save power where lights are often left on: toilets, stairs, passages, store rooms.

New opening

Motion sensor

The light switches on when someone walks in and off after they leave.

New opening

Day/night sensor

Stays off in daylight; works only when it is dark.

New opening

Low glow when empty

Dims to a low standby glow instead of switching off, then goes full bright when someone comes in.

Room size and wattage

A suggestion only: lights in this wattage rank first and every light stays available. Bigger rooms also need more lights; our team can plan the number for you.

New opening

Small (bathroom, passage) · 3–9 W per light

Suggested for small spaces.

New opening

Medium (bedroom, kitchen) · 10–15 W per light

Suggested for everyday rooms.

New opening

Large (living room, office cabin) · 16–20 W per light

Suggested for bigger rooms.

New opening

Very large (hall, showroom) · above 20 W per light

Suggested for halls, showrooms and office grid ceilings.

Light colour

Cool white is not brighter, only cooler.

Warm white

Warm white (2700K / 3000K)

Cosy, yellowish light for bedrooms and living rooms.

Natural white

Natural white (4000K)

Balanced white for kitchens, study areas and offices.

Adjust the shade

3-in-1

Changes between warm, natural and cool with the wall switch.

Adjust the shade

Tunable white

Adjust the shade with the remote or app supplied.

New opening

Colour (RGB)

Coloured light for decoration.

How will you control it?

The guide shows only controls a light already lists.

On-off switch

A normal wall switch. Most panels and downlights work this way.

Wall dimmer (Triac)

Brightness from a compatible wall dimmer.

DALI / 1-10V (wired control)

Dimming over separate control wires, usually for offices and projects.

Remote only (RF)

A radio remote for on-off, brightness and shade.

Remote + app

Use the remote or a phone app.

New opening

Zigbee (smart home hub)

Works with a compatible Zigbee hub or smart-home system.
