Light your kitchen in three layers

One light is never enough in a kitchen. Use pendants for the counter you sit at, downlights for the room, and strips for the worktop where you chop and cook.

Layer 1 · Pendants

Light the island and breakfast counter

Pendants light the counter where you serve, eat and talk. Hang the bottom of the shade 75-90 cm above the counter top and space them 60-75 cm apart. Metal and glass shades wipe clean easily near the cooking area.

Layer 2 · Ceiling lights

Even light for the whole room

Downlights light the whole kitchen. For a home kitchen, 7-12 W is enough. Place them over the front edge of the counter, 45-60 cm from the wall, so your head does not throw a shadow where you work. No false ceiling? Choose surface panel lights or surface downlights.

Layer 3 · Under-cabinet

Bright worktops, no shadows

An LED strip under the wall cabinets puts light right on the worktop. Fix it near the front edge of the cabinet underside, inside an aluminium profile with a diffuser. Choose 4000K neutral white so you see food and colours clearly.

Island kitchen

Hang 2-3 pendants over a 1.8 m island, 60-75 cm apart, with the shades 75-90 cm above the top. Add ceiling downlights for the rest of the room and strips under the wall cabinets for prep work.

Straight or L-shaped kitchen

Run downlights along the counter, 1-1.2 m apart and 45-60 cm from the wall. Add a strip under every run of wall cabinets. In an L-shaped kitchen, light both counter runs, including the corner.

Breakfast counter

Use 2-3 pendants for a 1.8 m counter so the light falls on each seat. Warm white 3000K feels relaxed at mealtimes, while 4000K stays on the cooking side.

No false ceiling

Recessed downlights need a false ceiling. On a plain concrete ceiling, use surface panel lights or surface downlights instead, and keep the same spacing of about 1-1.2 m.

Check before you buy

  • Choose 7-12 W COB downlights for your home kitchen; deep-recessed, anti-glare fittings keep glare low when you look up.
  • Keep one light colour within each area: 4000K for cooking and 3000K for pendants or the dining side.
  • Fix under-cabinet strips near the front edge of the cabinet underside so they light your counter, not the wall.
  • Match the driver to the strip's 12 V or 24 V rating and pick one about 20% above the total strip wattage.
  • For a 1.8 m counter, choose 2-3 pendants of 20-30 cm diameter, spaced 60-75 cm apart, centre to centre.
  • Choose metal or glass pendant shades for easy wiping; avoid fabric shades near your cooktop because of grease.
  • Use closed, splash-rated fittings near the sink and chimney, and ask us which models suit.

Kitchen lighting questions

What are the best lights for a kitchen?

Plan three layers for your kitchen: ceiling light for the whole room, under-cabinet light on the counter where you cut and cook, and pendants over an island, breakfast counter or dining table. For your ceiling, 7-12 W COB downlights suit home kitchens. Choose deep-recessed downlights to keep glare low when you look up.

How many downlights do I need in my kitchen?

A 10 x 10 ft kitchen usually needs 4-6 downlights. Space them about 1-1.2 m apart. Place them over the front edge of your counter, about 45-60 cm from the wall, so your head does not throw a shadow on the counter while you work.

Is warm white or cool white better for kitchen lights?

Neutral white 4000K gives you a good balance for cooking areas. Warm white 3000K suits your pendants and dining side. Cool white 6000K looks brighter and bluer. Keep one colour within each area when you choose your ceiling lights, counter lights and pendants.

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

Hang the bottom of each pendant shade 75-90 cm above your island counter top. Space pendants 60-75 cm apart, measured centre to centre. For a 1.8 m counter, 2-3 pendants of 20-30 cm diameter work well. Metal and glass shades are easy to wipe; avoid fabric near your cooktop because of grease.

What lights go under kitchen cabinets?

Use an LED strip of about 10-15 W per metre inside an aluminium profile with a diffuser cover. Fit it near the front edge of your cabinet underside to light the counter. Match the driver to your 12 V or 24 V strip, with about 20% extra wattage capacity. Door and hand-wave sensors can switch cabinet strips on and off automatically.
