- Two custom glass drop chandeliers
The story
A project in light
Jainsons Lights, since 1978, made two custom chandeliers for the double-height hall of a private residence in Jammu. Both hang from oval canopy plates, with glass drops set at different heights so the light runs down the full height of the room.
Project Overview:
- Site: a private residence (name withheld)
- Location: Jammu
- Year: 2024
- Scope: two custom chandeliers, made to size
Design Concept:
The hall has tall arched windows and carved jaali panels. Instead of one heavy frame, the light comes from long strings of glass that hang from a canopy plate and stay open to the view.
- Main chandelier, about 12 ft x 6 ft: a curved oval canopy plate in a polished gold finish carries about 50 hanging drops at different heights. Each drop strings amber textured-glass bodies between gold-finish metal spheres and spindle tips.
- Second chandelier, about 6 ft x 3 ft: 20 to 30 drops mix fluted cones, discs and ribbed cylinders in amber and smoke glass, hung in front of a tall arched window.
- Light: each glass body is lit from within, so the texture and ribbing of the glass glow warm when the chandeliers are on.
Execution Highlights:
- Staggered drops: the drops hang at different heights, so each chandelier reads as a cascade from the canopy down.
- Two sizes, one family: the same idea of glass strings on an oval plate, worked at two scales for the same hall.
The photos and video were taken at the site after installation.
