The brief
Tulips by Satyabhama was building a new designer-saree boutique on Road No 11, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, set to open in December 2025. Their interior designer had drafted the 3D in a style that leaned heavily on aesthetic ambient light, with very few commercial lights or backlights pointed at the actual merchandise. The owner reached out before fit-out because he was worried the products simply wouldn't be highlighted properly once the store opened.
How we approached it
We rebuilt the entire scheme in DIALux around one rule: products first, aesthetics second. Every saree rack, every show window and the photoshoot area got its own vertical-illuminance target before the layout was locked. We designed in contrast deliberately — bright product zones with quieter circulation in between, so the eye is pulled to the merchandise the moment you walk in. The show windows were treated as their own scene, lit to read from the street, not just from inside. Inside the trial rooms we planned two layers: one calibrated for the mirror view, and a photoshoot-grade layer the staff can switch on when customers want to capture the look. Track lighting runs through all three floors, so the team can re-aim and re-balance as the merchandise mix changes.
The light we used
Narrow-beam (36°) track spots with CRI 90+ carry the product light on all three floors: the racks, the display tables and the show windows. Slim track lights on the first floor cover the display zones that need to be re-aimable, and recessed COB downlights give the base light in the fitting rooms and toilets.
What the calculation showed
DIALux put every sales floor above the 500 lux target, with the merchandise clearly brighter than the walkways between it.
- Sales floors at 0.8 m: 882 lux average on the ground floor, 827 on the first and 776 on the second (target 500)
- Display tables: 1,774 to 2,152 lux average, and above 1,000 lux even at the darkest point
- Wall racks, on the shelf face: about 880 to 1,190 lux, two to three times the walkway beside them
- Walkways between the displays: 355 to 494 lux
- Photoshoot area, on the customer: 1,325 lux
- Fitting rooms: 888 to 1,158 lux at 0.8 m (target 500)
The outcome
Because we engineered before the store opened, the team could still change ceiling positions and electrical points based on the DIALux output — much cheaper than re-doing it after installation. The mirror and photoshoot set-up in the trial rooms became one of the standout details when the store opened in December 2025. The Jainsons design pack (DIALux report, aiming views and AutoCAD lighting layout) is the install team's source of truth.
