Design Team: Jainsons Lights Design Studio (Dialux, AutoCAD, aiming view)

The brief

Odhni Sarees came to us with their second-floor retail showroom in Delhi and a lighting layout already drawn by their interior designer. The job for our team: pressure-test the layout in Dialux before a single fixture went into the ceiling — fix the lux levels, kill the dark spots, and give the install team exact aiming instructions for every light so nothing was guessed on-site.

How we approached it

We ran the proposed layout through our standard retail showroom lighting design process — 3D modelling of the floor, perpendicular-illuminance calculations on every rack and surface, digital aiming for every fixture, and a visualisation review with the client before procurement.

The original draft was leaning heavily on ambient fill — too much soft light, not enough contrast. We re-balanced it to hit our minimum 3:1 contrast ratio from ambient floor to product-area illuminance, on a single warm 3000K colour temperature with CRI 97 across every fixture so fabric colours read true on the rack, on the customer, and in the trial-room mirror.

The three lighting layers

30 × CR1 — Ceiling Recessed Downlight. 30W, 36° beam, 125 lm/W, CRI 97, 3000K, IP20, 5-year warranty. Ambient base across the general floor and circulation — enough to walk through comfortably, not so much that it killed the contrast.

4 × CR2 — Ceiling Recessed Pull-Out Downlight. 15W, 36° beam, CRI 97, 3000K. Re-aimable lights in the trial rooms so customers can point the light to flatter the mirror view — not the back of their head.

111 × TR1 — Track Spot. 30W, 36° beam, 130 lm/W, CRI 97, 3000K, IP20, 5-year warranty. Vertical illuminance on every rack, engineered rack-by-rack in Dialux. Every spotlight got an aiming angle documented in the deck so the install team didn't have to guess on-site.

The outcome

The biggest win was at the visualisation stage. Once the Odhni Sarees promoters saw the 3D renders, they realised they didn't need wall-to-wall ambient fill — the contrast between lit merchandise and quieter empty spaces actually looked better, and they could spec fewer fixtures than the original plan called for. Every dark spot in the designer's draft was caught and fixed before procurement. The store team got the full deliverable pack — BOQ, Dialux calculation report, AutoCAD layout, aiming view, and lighting-layout PDF — so nothing was re-engineered on-site.
